News of a fresh adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's NY street gang musical, which famously hit the big screen in 1961, comes via an open casting call for the four lead roles of Tony, Maria, Anita and Bernardo. The previously announced project will feature a new adaptation by Angels in America Tony and Pulitzer victor Tony Kushner and direction by Oscar-winning film icon Steven Spielberg.

Steven has also recruited the producer of the 2009 Broadway revival of West Side Story, Kevin McCollum, 55, as a producer for his movie. Spielberg's reps did not immediately respond with comment. With the director's Oscar-nominated historical drama The Post now playing in theaters and his Ready Player One adaptation set to hit the scene in less than two months, Spielberg has been looking ahead to the next pair of movies that he can direct and release in rapid succession. The announcement explicitly asks for Latinx actors to audition for the latter three, a welcome sign that Spielberg won't whitewash this story. There's not much more than that-the actors should be between 15 and 25 and able to sing, with dance experience a plus. The film took home a total of 10 Academy Awards, including one for original Tony-winning choreographer and director Robbins (shared with Robert Wise) along with the top prize of Best Picture. The music was written by Leonard Bernstein, with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim - the original 1957 Broadway production also marked Sondheim's Broadway debut.
