Police identified the suspect as Samuel Woodward, 20, of nearby Newport Beach, the Orange County Register reported.

Orange County spokeswoman Carrie Braun told the Orange County Register that "the change in the weather helped [the body] be more readily seen", in a reference to the.

The friend also had what looked like "dirt under the fingernails" on both of his hands and, during a follow-up interview at the sheriff's headquarters, took measures to avoid touching any doors in the office with his hands or fingers, the newspaper reported.

Investigators said Woodward told them Bernstein walked off into the park alone when they arrived.

The body of Bernstein, 19, was found Tuesday in Borrego Park in Lake Forest, California after the pre-med student went missing more than a week prior on January 2. Woodward apparently told police he drove Bernstein to the park but did not get out of the vehicle with him and left when he didn't return. Woodward left and then returned at 4 a.m.to search again but didn't find Bernstein, investigators said. Barnes said Woodward had asked for a lawyer. Authorities have said they were investigating the death as a homicide. He said the scratches and abrasions were from a "fight club" that he was involved in.

Orange County sheriff's officials were expected to give details of the arrest in connection with the killing of Blaze Bernstein at an afternoon news conference. The same report said police have obtained DNA evidence from Bernstein's body and the crime scene. Officials did not comment on the cause of death. "Our words can not express how grateful the family is to their community".

Bernstein went missing just five days before he was planning on returning to Penn for the start of his second semester.

"Revenge is empty", Bernstein's mother, Jeanne Pepper Bernstein, wrote on Twitter after the arrest was announced.

The student had also just been elected to serve as the managing editor of Penn Appétit, a food publication at Penn, and had spent time over winter break brainstorming editorial visions and strategies to implement this coming year for the magazine. They said he did not have money, his ID or wallet when he left, and did not use drugs or alcohol.

"We will continue to search for justice for Blaze and his family", Annee Della Donna, an attorney for the Bernstein family, said at the press conference, according to the Daily Pennsylvanian.

Jamie-Lee Josselyn, associate director for recruitment for creative writing at Penn, called the death "confusing" and a "mystery", describing Bernstein as a student who talked about his promising future and carved a path at the university even before he arrived as a freshman.

She said a support session for students was scheduled for noon Thursday in the Ben Franklin Room at Houston Hall.
