Japan to help fund return of displaced Myanmar Rohingya Muslims

Four Rohingyas, including three children and a woman, were killed in a fire at an UN-run transit camp in southeastern Bangladesh's Ukhiya upazila near Cox's Bazar on Friday night.

As per Anadolu news agency, the request comes after the military admitted to the killing of 10 Rohingyas in the war-ravaged Rakhine state.

JAPAN'S foreign minister, Taro Kono, has urged Myanmar's civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, to guarantee the safe and voluntary return of displaced Rohingya Muslims to the troubled Rakhine state.

A statement Wednesday on the military commander-in-chief's Facebook page said the Rohingya found in the mass grave had threatened Buddhist villagers and were killed in retaliation.

"A Myanmar government spokesman said in response to ARSA's statement that sometimes "terrorists and villagers were allied" in attacks" against security forces. "There will be an ongoing investigating process whether they are members of ARSA or not".

According to news report, Kono made the comments in a joint news conference with Myanmar's de facto, leader Aung San Suu Kyi, in the capital Naypyitaw.

After meeting the Japanese foreign minister yesterday, Suu Kyi raised the army's admission of involvement in the Inn Din killings as a "new step taken by our country". "I see it that way because a country needs to take responsibility for the rule of law in the country, and this is the first step on the road of taking responsibility and it is a positive thing".

Asked if the revelations about the killing at the village of Inn Din, about 50 km (30 miles) north of the state capital Sittwe, could be a concern for refugees who are being asked to return, Suu Kyi said: "Some people might be afraid, but this is not something that has happened right now".

More than 600,000 Rohingya, who are not recognised by the Myanmar government as one of the country's many ethnic groups, have fled to Bangladesh since August previous year, when violence between armed Rohingya and Myanmar security forces prompted a severe crackdown.

As of December 2017, an estimated 6,55,000 Rohingya people fled to Bangladesh to avoid the persecution from the security forces that started in Myanmar's Rakhine state in August past year.

Myanmar denies ethnic cleansing, saying its security forces had mounted legitimate counter-insurgency clearance operations.
