Trump warns Turkey's leader to be careful not to spark conflict between his country, US forces

This reaction of the Defense Ministry came after earlier reports that the United States intends to create a 30,000-strong Kurdish-led force in northeast Syria.

"The United States has around 2,000 special forces troops in Syria who were deployed in March". As the US -led offensive ousted ISIS from its de facto capital of Raqqa in the north, and a separate Syrian military operation backed by Russian Federation and Iran largely took out ISIS in its final eastern stronghold of Deir Ezzor, the focus of the conflict has now pivoted to the northwestern district of Afrin.

Erdogan and Trump exchanged views on the latest developments in Syria and Operation Olive Branch launched by Turkey on Saturday with a view to fighting off threats from PYD/PKK and Daesh terrorist organizations, according to a statement.

"We carefully track those weapons that are provided to them, we ensure that they, to the maximum extent possible, don't fall into the wrong hands and we're continuing discussions with the Turks on this issue", Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, joint staff director, told reporters.

Differences over Syria policy have already strained Turkey's relations with Washington nearly to a breaking point.

The YPG also holds the key town of Manbij east of Afrin and a long strip of territory in northern Syria east of the Euphrates heading right up to the Iraqi border. First, the USA has been completely sidelined in the operation.

"Clearly we are very alert to what is happening, specifically in the area of Manbij because that is where our. coalition forces are", Colonel Ryan Dillon, a spokesman for the US-led coalition, told Reuters news agency.

He "urged Turkey to exercise caution and to avoid any actions that might risk conflict between Turkish and American forces".

At the same time, he and U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis have said that the U.S. recognizes that Turkey, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally with the alliance's second-largest military, has "legitimate security concerns", and that success against IS "does not remove many of Turkey's concerns".

"We are in full readiness to respond to any attack".

Turkey said three of its soldiers had been killed.

The statement posted on the website of the Afrin authorities underscores the increasingly complex theatre of war in northern Syria, where Turkey's fight against a Kurdish militia threatens to scramble alliances in a seven-year-old conflict.

"The reality on the ground is that the USA considers Syrian Kurds the most effective fighting force against ISIS".

Communication between the United States and Turkey has continued over Syria, despite the countries' differences.

"(But) in order for us to discuss the security zone or any other issue with the USA, we have to reestablish trust", Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters.

Turkey now says it wants to establish a 30km "safe zone" in Afrin to prevent a "Kurdish corridor" from being established along its border.

A senior USA official said that as of Tuesday the Turks had not been ready to engage in detail on such a proposal. From Afrin, they could move to other cities now held by the YPG.

The Observatory said there was "fierce resistance" on the ground from the Kurdish fighters.
