If you've seen any of the fantastic, mysterious trailers for Ex-Machina director Alex Garland's adaptation of the novel Annihilation, it's not hard to understand why the horror/sci-fi film is one of our most anticipated movies of 2018. A few years back, he put out the contemplative sci-fi film, Ex Machina, and for his next film, he will be sending Natalie Portman into the Shimmer in Annihilation.
She's talking about "the Shimmer", the odd, glowing, sinister, shape-shifting phenomenon that threatens to carry out just what the title suggests.
In this new featurette from Paramount, that we first came across at io9, stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez, and Tuva Novotny talk about the mutations and horrors taking place inside the "The Shimmer", the unexplained phenomenon that has claimed the lives of nearly everyone else who has entered it before them.
The question about the Shimmer's goal is the mystery that sits at the center of Annihilation. Paramount will do the traditional theatrical release in the U.S., Canada and China. Based on Jeff VanderMeer's best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy, Annihilation follows Lena, a biologist and former soldier, who joins a mission to what happened to her husband inside Area X, a sinister and mysterious phenomenon that is expanding across the American coastline. It was written and directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, 28 Days Later). Joining her are Jennifer Jason Leigh as a psychologist and the leader of the expedition, an anthropologist played by Gina Rodriguez, a surveyor played by Tessa Thompson and a linguist played by Tuva Novotny.
Annihilation hits theaters next month on February 23, 2018.
The featurette shows off new footage of the world beyond the barrier, where Portman says they discover that life beyond it has begun to mutate.
