Overwatch Hints at Balance Tweaks for Mercy, Junkrat, Hanzo, and More

Overwatch Hints at Balance Tweaks for Mercy, Junkrat, Hanzo, and More

While progress is being made, Blizzard acknowledge that they still have more to do.

Kaplan stated that Blizzard is considering further nerfs towards Mercy, who has already been the target of several balance tweaks already, and the team is now monitoring the Public Test Realm servers.

According to Jeff Kaplan, the amount of reports has increased by 20% and the incidents of abusive chat has decreased by 17% since the report system rework.

"We know those numbers are not as great as they could be, we know that the problem is not solved, and things aren't ideal, but it's getting a lot better", Kaplan said.

In fact, Kaplan revealed that the Overwatch team actively hunts down toxicity shown in YouTube videos and presumably Twitch also, shutting down the accounts before players even have a chance to report the bad behaviour.

For example, Blizzard now has a program that monitors social media like YouTube and track downs toxic players before they are reported.

Mosquitoes can rapidly learn and remember the smell of hosts, study shows
Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are carriers of risky viruses that cause dengue fever , Zika , chikungunya, and yellow fever. Mosquitoes are way smarter than previously thought. "This could lead to more effective tools for mosquito control".

In particular, Kaplan mentioned Mercy, whose changes are now being experimented with in the Overwatch PTR. While they aren't the best numbers, it's great to see that they are trying their best to enforce a safe and healthy gaming environment. In a pretty impassioned address to Mercy mains, Kaplan says that if the changes nerf her too strongly, "we will bring her back", and that the team will be paying "very close attention" to her changes.

There are many more characters that Kaplan expresses aren't quite where the team would like them in terms of balance, and he reassures fans that they are constantly prototyping and playtesting until a suitable direction for each is chosen. Kaplan adds that the team is approaching any potential Mercy adjustments carefully, because the team wants to keep her viable.

Symmetra and Mei are also being considered for balancing adjustments to make them more relevant in the current metagame, but Kaplan noted that there will likely be no major changes to the two heroes. We are listening to community feedback on balance all the time. As for Hanzo, players have been saying that Hanzo's Scatter Arrow can easily one-shot an enemy and has to be balanced. Kaplan said that the development team may adjust the ability to make it more fair, though there is also the possibility that it will be replaced entirely.

"We're very pleased with those results", Kaplan said. However, Jeff Kaplan assured viewers that if the nerfs seem too extreme, there will be another balance update, so players shouldn't worry about that. Meanwhile, Symmetra still feels like a very situational hero who "doesn't have enough usefulness across the board".

"I always describe our balance process as a triangle", Kaplan said during Thursday's Developer Update video.
