The Shining Sequel Doctor Sleep Lands a Director

Mike Flanagan To Helm Stephen King's 'The Shining' Sequel 'Doctor Sleep'

Mike Flanagan To Helm Stephen King's 'The Shining' Sequel 'Doctor Sleep'

Flanagan's take on King's "unfilmable " Gerald's Game for Netflix was a hit that impressed even King himself, who called it "horrifying, hypnotic, terrific".

There's no timeline yet on the film adaptation (or casting news for what is sure to be a sought-after starring role), but given the fact that both Flanagan and Stephen King adaptations are white-hot right now, it's probably safe to say we won't have to wait too long for an update. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes "Doctor Sleep".

Indeed, Doctor Sleep is being made at Warner Bros., the same studio that spearheaded the R-rated It to $700 million worldwide. Kevin McCormick is overseeing Doctor Sleep for Warner Bros. He will also rewrite the screenplay, which was originally penned by Akiva Goldsman, one of the many cooks who toiled away on The Dark Tower.

Okay, prolific Netflix (and other) director Mike Flanagan may not be horror royalty yet, but he's certainly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the genre, as he'll be following Before I Wake, Ouija: Origin of Evil, and King adaptation Gerald's Game with Doctor Sleep - which Warner Bros. has just fast tracked, according to Deadline. The story picks up with Danny Torrance as a middle-aged adult, who's now inherited the alcoholism and anger of his murderous father. Naturally, all kinds of fresh supernatural mayhem occurs. Flanagan already caught the attention of King fans with his excellent adaptation of Gerald's Game previous year on Netflix. They're both incredible, but King's raw humanity, which powers nearly all of his work, is deliberately absent from Kubrick's chilly and mesmerizing take on the material. Will they try to have it both ways and make a movie that functions for both book and movie fans?
