
Severe storm has led to flight cancellations
A cyclist in the Netherlands had a pretty tricky ride on Thursday as he struggled to keep moving while battling into a brutal headwind as Storm Friederike battered northern Europe.
Schiphol, one of the busiest airports in Europe, had to close two of three departure halls after roof plates were blown off the terminal building.
Facing gusts of up to 140km/h (90mph), Germany's train operator Deutsche Bahn cancelled all long-distance services for the rest of Thursday.
In the United Kingdom, windstorms Wednesday night into Thursday morning brought down trees and caused temporary power outages in parts of the country.
The Netherlands bore the brunt of the severe winter storms - the second this month - as bitter winds barrelled off the North Sea to hit the low-lying country with full force.
In western Germany, some 100,000 people were left without electricity and schools remained closed.
Deutsche Bahn's announcement Thursday afternoon came hours after all trains in two of Germany's populous western areas, North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony, were halted. Any regional trains still running have cut their speed because of the strong winds.

The traffic chaos also plagued the roads, with the Dutch national traffic office reporting 66 trucks had been toppled over by the high winds causing huge traffic jams on the motorways, the highest recorded number since 1990.
All flights at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport were cancelled, and, nationwide, trains, trams and buses were halted after the highest weather alert was issued for large parts of the country.
