The Real 'Rosie The Riveter' Has Died At 96
The poster was meant to deter absenteeism and strikes among Westinghouse employees in wartime and never meant for public display, but became a popular feminist symbol in the 1980s and was seen on t-shirts, coffee mugs and other memorabilia, the Times said.
Naomi Parker Fraley, the inspiration for the Rosie the Riveter "We Can Do It!" poster, has died at age 96 after spending almost seven decades as a virtual unknown.

Fraley worked in a Navy machine shop at the Alameda Naval Air Station during World War II and, it appears the poster was based on a newspaper photograph taken of her at that time.

Doyle had previously been known as the real Rosie. She was photographed in 1942 working at a lathe in a factory, which inspired Howard J Miller's Rosie the Riveter poster. They put Dr James Kimble on the task, and after six years of investigation and research, found that while Doyle's claim was made in good faith, it was Naomi Parker Fraley who lay true claim to inspiring the image of Rosie the Riveter.
Fraley, who died in Longview, Washington, had gone unrecognized as the inspiration for the "We Can Do It" image on the popular war poster and feminist touchstone for almost 70 years because someone else had been given credit, The New York Times reported. "A lot of women did what she did".
In 2011, when Fraley saw the picture of herself identified as someone else, she was justifiably shocked, and wrote the National Park Service, who decides the title.
