Toyota South Africa issues recall of over 700 000 vehicles

The massive recall of close to three-quarters of a million Toyota vehicles in South Africa, reported by various worldwide news agencies on Friday morning, is in fact the same recall for the replacement of airbags with faulty inflators, made by Takata more than a decade ago, which has been ongoing since 2015.

Other manufacturers that were reportedly recalling vehicles because of concerns over the faulty Takata airbags are Mitsubishi, Fuji Heavy Industries and Hino Motors.

This airbag issue is not new to the motoring industry, with faulty Takata airbags the cause of multiple recalls across multiple auto brands in recent years.

"In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could pass through the airbag cushion material, striking and possibly injuring the occupants in the event of an accident", said a statement.
