Trump denies New York Times report he tried to fire Mueller

Booker claimed the USA was in "troubling times" and compared Trump to "foreign dictators". The Times reports that Trump backed down only after the top White House lawyer threatened to quit.

"I'm looking forward to it, actually", Trump said late Wednesday when asked by reporters at the White House.

Obstruction-of-justice cases turn on motive, he said. He'd certainly have the rock solid support of the entire conservative media establishment, which would immediately go into overdrive explaining that the investigation has been a plot from the very start by the Democratic Party and the Deep State to get rid of a president who's promised to end their corrupt hegemony over American politics.

"All right, well, the president says that's fake news, it happened last June, it's something we have to tell you about because it is a headline on The New York Times", she said. He says, I'm saying it again; firing the special counsel is a red line that the president can not cross and would be a gross abuse of power. What do you think about that?

An obstruction case would be harder to prosecute without evidence of an underlying crime, such as colluding with a foreign government to tip an election.

Per a new report out by Foreign Policy, President Donald Trump pushed his aides previous year to come up with a plan to discredit Federal Bureau of Investigation officials who were likely to testify against him inSpecial Counsel Robert Mueller's probe.

"Take it all together: Trump admits he fired FBI Director over Russian Federation".

Democrats, frustrated by what they see as Republican recalcitrance, openly accuse the GOP of abetting an all-out assault on the special counsel and the federal law enforcement agencies assisting him.

Mueller learned of the incident in recent months as his investigators interviewed current and former senior White House officials in an inquiry into whether the president obstructed justice, the Times reported.

Among those contacts: the president allegedly asked Comey to pledge his loyalty to him. And then ultimately it just sort of dropped.

Flynn pleaded guilty last month to lying to the FBI and is cooperating with the continuing special counsel's investigation. "What did you mean when you talked about these latest developments about Mueller What did you mean by that?"

Rosenstein appointed Mueller after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the Russian Federation investigation and is the official overseeing the special counsel.

A person familiar with the situation told Reuters Trump sought to have Mueller removed over what the president perceived as conflicts of interest.

His lawyers convinced him it was a bad idea and eventually Trump pledged to work with Mueller's office, which they said he has done.

Four people have so far been charged in the Mueller investigation, including Flynn and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. Christopher Coons, D-Del., would allow a fired special counsel to appeal the president's decision to a panel of judges, to avoid trampling the president's executive authority. I personally think it would be a very significant mistake even though I don't think there's a justification.

Yet legal analysts said the collective weight of Trump's actions is pushing him closer to an ugly confrontation with the special counsel.

The Times story described Trump formulating a case against Mueller as someone who could investigate possible Trump campaign involvement with Russia's attack on the 2016 election.
