A Democratic Senator has dismissed reports that Donald Trump tried to fire the special counsel charged with investigating his campaign as simply "New York talk".

Mr Trump argued at the time that Mr Mueller could not be fair because of a dispute over golf club fees that he said Mr Mueller owed at a Trump golf club in Sterling, Virginia.

According to the New York Times and other us media organizations, Trump ordered White House lawyer Don McGahn to instruct the Justice Department to fire Mueller.

"You know, he didn't actually fire Mueller". At the time, Chris ruddy, a long-time friend of the president's, went public warning him not to do it. That episode may well have marked the beginning of a broader softening toward Mueller's investigation, as reflected in the less antagonistic stance the Trump administration has taken toward the special counsel in recent weeks.

CBS News has confirmed last June President Trump was angry about Mueller's investigation and raised concerns about three possibleMuellerr conflicts of interest.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) called for Congress to pass a bill to protect Mueller, and Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) issued a blistering statement complaining that "instead of protecting Mueller's investigation from undue interference, many Republicans in Congress have stepped up their spurious attacks against the Department of Justice, the FBI, and the Special Counsel". Trump was joined in his denial by White House counsellor Kellyanne Conway, who said around the same time that the White House hadn't "even discussed" the idea of firing Mueller. His investigators have been edging steadily closer to the White House, interviewing Attorney General Jeff Sessions last week. He has been part of Trump's team since the transition.

A number of aides and attorneys were against the notion, believing that it would create a firestorm of criticism against Trump, the source said.

An additional 28 people affiliated with the Trump campaign have also been interviewed by either the special counsel or congressional committees probing Russian election meddling. Mueller, a highly regarded former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, has already obtained indictments of four former Trump campaign officials - including former National Security adviser Michael Flynn - and is moving toward interrogating the president himself. Like last May. I mean you don't fire the man who at that time was just kicking off the investigation into alleged collusion with Russian Federation unless you're afraid.

"I don't think there's a need for legislation right now to protect Mueller", House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Sunday on NBC News' "Meet The Press".
