Trump lashes out at Democrats on border safety, DACA

Trump Lashes Out After Schumer Withdraws Offer On Border Wall

Such a discussion was going to happen anyway.

Trump's remarks amounted to a preview of that framework.

Earlier in the week, the Democrats had withdrawn an offer to fund the building of the wall alongside the US-Mexico border.

The program, which began in 2012, gave qualified Dreamers, who were brought illegally to the United States as children, temporary protection from deportation and the ability to study and work in the United States. Tell 'em not to worry.

"As I have always said, once the Government is funded, my administration will work toward solving the problem of very unfair illegal immigration", President Donald J. Trump (R) said in a statement after singing a continuing resolution to fund the government.

Democrats have been spearheading an effort to protect about 700,000 young Dreamers after Trump last September announced the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program instituted by his Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama. Trump feels like this might become a yearly event unless the Republicans win a 60-member supermajority in the Senate after this year's midterms, which isn't certain, and that's why he's toying with the "nuclear option" even if it eventually ends up backfiring on him.

Trump said he was confident that a deal can be reached on the issue.

"In short it's totally unacceptable to the president and should be declared dead on arrival", said White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

"The president has given us his general outline of what he's interested in but you can't do a bill based on a general outline and at some point we're going to need more specificity from him", Kennedy said. "If the president has some ideas he'd like to share, of course we'll take a look at them".

On Tuesday, the White House came out strongly against the Graham-Durbin proposal, saying Trump would not sign the bill as now proposed. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said he didn't know and added, "But they're not writing the bill". Senate Minority Leader has said trying to hammer out a deal with the president was "like negotiating with Jell-O".

President Donald Trump and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer went head-to-head on social media Friday, with the Commander-in-Chief blasting "Cryin" Chuck" over his shutdown surrender and the Senator accusing Trump of using "Dreamers' to "tear apart" the U.S. immigration system. "We must have safety and security, together with a strong Military, for our great people!"

The stage is now set for the ultimate showdown between Trump and the Democrats over the border wall and DACA, with neither side willing to compromise on these pivotal interrelated issues prior to the midterm elections later this year, though they also don't want to be blamed for defunding the government if this stalemate can't be overcome.

"He's driving that a DACA solution is something he wants", Perdue said. An aide said the offer was pulled on Sunday.

In agreeing on Monday to end a three-day government shutdown and fund the government until February 8, Senate Democrats got a promise from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that he would allow an immigration debate on the Senate floor in the near future, the first one since 2013. That suggests both parties would be allowed to offer amendments.

Van Hollen said Democrats still have some leverage in the Senate and could use budget caps on defense and nondefense spending, while he is hopeful that a bipartisan agreement to increase defense and domestic spending - combined with an immigration reform measure - will hopefully prevent another shutdown. "Because without his support, I don't think it would pass the House of Representatives", which has more conservative views on the topic.
