Trump lawyer files lawsuits against BuzzFeed, Fusion GPS over dossier
The lawyer Michael Cohen, filed the lawsuit in a NY state court Tuesday, almost a year after BuzzFeed published the dossier commissioned by political opposition research firm Fusion GPS. "Just filed a defamation action against for publishing the lie filled document on and me!"
In an opinion column published in The New York Times, BuzzFeed editor-in-chief Ben Smith said he was proud of the decision to publish the dossier, saying Russian attempts to influence the 2016 USA election has become the "central challenge to Mr. Trump's presidency".
President Donald Trump's personal attorney, Michael D. Cohen, filed a defamation lawsuit against Fusion GPS, the research firm behind the controversial dossier prepared by a former British spy which suggested Russian Federation had potentially compromising information on Trump and which alluded to possible collusion between his campaign and Moscow.
The filings were also made against Fusion GPS, the political research firm that compiled the dossier, and Buzzfeed one day before the statute of limitations would have expired.
BuzzFeed's editor-in-chief, Ben Smith, defended the decision to publish the dossier in a New York Times op-ed. Comey then briefed former President Barack Obama and President-elect Donald Trump on the dossier, further giving it weight, in the eyes of news outlets.
"We strongly believed that publishing the disputed document whose existence we and others were reporting was in the public interest", he wrote.
"This is not the first time Trump's personal lawyer has attacked the free press, and we look forward to defending our First Amendment rights in court". Simpson told congressional leaders that the FBI found the dossier credible because an undisclosed "human source" associated with Trump had offered the bureau corroborating information.

A transcript of the interview with Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson by the Senate Judiciary Committee last summer was published on Tuesday.

Mr. Cohen is not the first to sue BuzzFeed over the dossier. Republicans have questioned whether the Steele dossier was the impetus for the FBI's investigation into the Trump campaign, indicating a politically motivated witch hunt.
