Trump sent a letter to African leaders gathering Sunday at a summit in Ethiopia that said he "deeply respects" the people of Africa.

The president offered "best wishes for a successful summit" of the African Union this weekend in Ethiopia, and noted that US and African troops are "fighting side by side to defeat terrorists and build secure communities".

The outspoken USA leader congratulated Rwandan President Paul Kagame on taking over as chair of the African Unio, which Trump said was a "great honour".

Many in Africa were taken aback by the comments after almost a year of little attention to Africa by the Trump administration.

Mr Trump's letter, seen by The Associated Press and confirmed by two USA officials, says the United States "profoundly respects" the partnerships and values shared by the U.S. and Africans and that the president's commitment to strong relationships with African nations is "firm".

Trump's reported comments decrying immigration from "shithole countries" prompted global backlash, particularly from African leaders, who blasted the remarks as a deep insult from the president of an otherwise friendly country. "Please give my warmest regards", Trump told Kagame after they held a one-on-one meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Trump also offered his "best wishes for a successful summit", and made note that his administration guarantees "free, fair and reciprocal trade" with African nations, while working to "safeguard legal immigration".

Tillerson's "extended visit" to Africa is expected to include stops in four to six countries, officials said Saturday.

Neither side referred to Trump's vulgar comment. Trump reportedly said, in a reference to African nations and Haiti.

In the letter, Trump says the United States "profoundly respects" the partnerships and values shared by the US and Africans. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, however, countered by expressing his love for Trump and saying he should be praised for not mincing his words.
