Trump mentions Jews in Holocaust Remembrance Day message

US President Donald Trump issued a statement commemorating International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Friday, avoiding a controversy he faced a year ago by explicitly referencing the six million Jews who were systematically murdered by Nazi Germany.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned of rising anti-Semitism in her country on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, calling the need to protect Jewish buildings "shameful".

"Tomorrow marks the 73rd anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Nazi death and concentration camp in Poland", said the statement released Friday noting the anniversary set by the United Nations to commemorate the Holocaust. At the time, his press secretary said the statement did not specifically mention Jewish victims because other people had been killed, as well. Despite the trauma they carry with them, they continue to educate us by sharing their experiences, strength, wisdom, and generosity of spirit to advance respect for human rights.

"Every generation must learn and apply the lessons of the Holocaust to prevent new horrors against humanity from occurring".

Trump added: "As I have said: 'We will stamp out prejudice".

The statement makes clear mention of the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust, a notable difference with last year's statement, which was criticized for not mentioning Jews or anti-Semitism.

Last year, when asked about the omission of Jews from the statement, current White House communications director Hope Hicks told CNN's Jake Tapper that "despite what the media reports, we are an incredibly inclusive group, and we took into account all of those who suffered".
