Trump has, of course, denied the report and slammed the Times, telling reporters in Switzerland on Friday, "Fake news, folks".

Mr McGahn is reported to have disagreed with the President's case for dismissing Mr Mueller and told senior White House officials that firing him would have a catastrophic effect on Mr Trump's presidency and raise questions about whether the White House was trying to obstruct the Russian Federation probe.

After receiving Trump's order to fire Mueller, Donald F. McGahn, the White House counsel, reportedly refused to comply and said he would resign instead, prompting Trump to back off.

'And Don McGahn, if the story is true in The New York Times, did the right thing, and good news is the president listened, ' Graham said.

Mueller was appointed to oversee the probe into allegations that the Trump campaign somehow colluded with Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential election, after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey in early May 2017.

Because, you know, when you're under investigation for obstruction of justice, the best move is to obstruct some more. "You say, 'Oh, I'm going to dismiss him.' No, I'm not dismissing anybody", Trump said at the time.

When asked by reporters late Wednesday about being questioned by Robert Mueller, the president said he's "looking forward to it, actually".

"We decline to comment out of respect for the Office of the Special Counsel and its process", Ty Cobb, the president's lawyer for the special counsel probe, told the newspaper.

Various news outlets, including Fox News, which is one of Trump's favored news sources, confirmed the report.

"I haven't given it any thought".

Either way, he and Trump's other attorneys encouraged the president to keep Mueller in place.

In the months that followed, Trump's close advisers tried to calm the president's nerves surrounding the investigation, often consulting him that the probe would be ending soon.

The assumption otherwise is that they and their unnamed sources are not just more believable than the president but so much more believable that his denial, other than in the USA Today story, need not even be included.
