Trump Ordered Mueller Fired - But Backed Down

President Trump Says He Would Talk to Mueller Under Oath

President Trump Says He Would Talk to Mueller Under Oath

The New York Times and other United States media reported Thursday that President Trump had ordered the firing of Mr Mueller in June 2017 but that the president climbed down when the top White House lawyer threatened to resign.

On Thursday, Trump's lawyer said that more than 20 White House employees have given interviews to the special counsel in his probe of possible obstruction of justice and Trump campaign ties to Russian election interference.

A Trump-Mueller meeting could happen with the next two or three weeks, the president said, quickly adding it would be "subject to my lawyers".

Speaking to the reporters outside White House before leaving for the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, the commander-in-chief said he was open to testify to Mueller's team, which is now conducting a probe into Trump campaign's ties to Russian operatives.

The call for Mueller's firing came just a month after Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey in May.

The special counsel is also thought to be probing whether Trump sought to interfere with the Justice Department's Russian Federation investigation.

Thursday, Trump attorney John Dowd released documentation that the White House has turned over more than 20,000 records and the Trump campaign has handed over more than 1.4 million pages to the special counsel's investigation, and more than 20 White House employees have been interviewed.

Ty Cobb, the lead White House lawyer dealing with the investigation, wanted to stress that Mr Trump was speaking hurriedly and only meant to say that he was willing to have a meeting.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has been interviewed in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

"She didn't do it under oath, but I would do it under oath and you know she didn't do it under oath", he said.

A source familiar with the exchange told CNN that the collection of possible themes include whether or not Trump asked Comey to drop his investigation of Flynn after he had lied to the FBI and the vice president about his contacts with Russia's then-ambassador, Sergey Kislyak.

Trump has given conflicting answers as to whether he would agree to a potential interview with Mueller.

Ruddy, the CEO of Newsmax - who is a member of Mar-a-Lago and a longtime pal of Trump's - freaked out a bit after the president said that he would totally have a chat with Mueller, no problemo.

"You fight back, oh, it's obstruction", Trump said.

This is the first report of the president attempting to fire Mueller.

According to one source, the President's attorneys will likely present their arguments to Mueller's team that there is no case against Trump.

Trump also said he wants $25 billion to build his border wall, which he touted repeatedly during the campaign, along with $5 billion for other security measures.

Dowd's disclosure did only not name the people nor provide a breakdown of how many were interviewed only by Mueller's team.

The Washington Post, USA Today and the New York Times have stories.

Trump's former Campaign Manager Paul Manafort has also been charged on 12 counts, including conspiracy to launder money.

Trump told reporters Wednesday that he would do an interview with Mueller "under oath", adding that he would be guided by the advice of his attorneys.

The President will be accompanied and advised by his lawyers during the interview, but some believe his long history of making false statements and exaggerations would always bring risks.
