Trump says Sen. Durbin misrepresented what the president said during DACA meeting

But other Republicans, pained by the turn of events, spoke out against the president as debate over the slur spilled into Sunday television talk shows.

President Donald Trump has denied that he is racist, after a row broke out over his alleged use of the word "shithole" to describe African nations.

U.S. Senator Michael Bennet (D-Colorado), who is sponsoring a bill that would provide so-called DREAMers (people brought to the United States illegally by their parents as children) with a path to citizenship but also provide funds for border security, stopped short of calling Trump a racist during an appearance on Meet the Press on Sunday.

In remarks to reporters in Chicago, Durbin stood by his account of the meeting.

The Post story attribution was to "several people briefed on the meeting", not naming any sources, so the on-the-record confirmation from Durbin was important. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

He had announced he was ending this protection past year but the move was blocked by a federal judge on Tuesday. Trump also tweeted on Friday morning that he did not use the "language" that had been reported.

Trump has faced claims of racism throughout his adult life. Durbin says it's clear where the civil rights icon would would be on this debate. Senator Graham has told others the reports were basically accurate.

Trump has denied being racist, labeling himself the "least racist person there is" during his 2016 campaign.

President Donald Trump ignited a firestorm on Thursday when it was reported that he had called Haiti, El Salvador, and African nations "shithole countries" at a bipartisan meeting on immigration, and said the U.S. needed more immigrants from countries like Norway. "That I can tell you", he said.

Purdue and another Republican participant, Senator Tom Cotton, had said previously they did not specifically recall Trump making the comments attributed to him.

In 1989, he took out full-page ads in four NY newspapers demanding the return of the death penalty after five black teenagers were arrested over the rape of a woman in Central Park.

Durbin was asked by the Sun-Times why he did not go public until after the Washington Post story. Paul said Trump was a major financial backer of the trip, which Paul used to perform cataract surgeries for about 200 poor people.

It's at this meeting last Thursday where Trump is said to have used a vulgarity to describe African countries. "What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made - a big setback for DACA!"

A key issue they need to agree on is what to do with an Obama-era scheme that protects some 800,000 young people who entered the United States illegally as children - known as the Dreamers.

"I don't know if there is going to be a shutdown", he said.
