Trump says Senate should change rules if shutdown continues

The House passed a spending bill Thursday to fund the government through February 16, giving lawmakers more time to work out a compromise on legislation to fund federal agencies through September. It has been less than 24 hours since the Senate failed to pass a spending bill to keep the federal government running, and in that time, we've witnessed tons of politicians playing the blame game.

However, a short-term spending bill fell short in the Senate, where Republicans have a narrow 51-49 majority so passing most legislation requires bipartisan support.

Democrats wanted a bill to include a solution for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which Trump announced in September he was ending, while Trump and the Republicans demanded significant concessions on border security, including a wall between the United States and Mexico.

U.S. President Donald Trump has been busy on Twitter, writing, " Democrats are far more concerned with illegal Immigrants than they are with our great Military or Safety at our unsafe Southern Border.

Mr Trump tweeted: 'Democrats are holding our military hostage over their desire to have unchecked illegal immigration.

"Americans know Republicans own the Trump Shutdown", said Rep. Jose Serrano (D-NY).

Congressional Republicans also laid the blame at Democrats' feet and named the shutdown after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, calling it the Schumer Shutdown.

"I think it's more hard to get any agreement on DACA in a shutdown", he said. While five Democrats ended up voting for the measure, five Republicans voted against it.

"It all really stems from the president, whose inability to clinch a deal has created the Trump shutdown", Schumer said.

Ryan hasn't weighed in but a House Republican aide said the chamber will take up whatever the Senate sends over.

McConnell then proposed the Monday noon ET vote, to which Schumer did not object.

Ryan, appearing on CBS' Face the Nation, said the House will back a short-term deal to fund the government through February 8.

The announcement comes after Democrats and Republicans once again failed to come to an agreement on a spending bill concerning key issues like immigration and health care.

This is the first shutdown in USA history with one party in control of the House, Senate, and the presidency.

Senators were reaching for a deal overnight Sunday to try to end a two-day-old government shutdown, hoping to prevent the worst of the effects of furloughs that hits in earnest on Monday.
