On January 13, Trump had "questioned" why the USA only accepted immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and Africa, during a meeting at the Oval Office in White House to discuss reforming the country's immigration policy.
After sparking worldwide outrage for reportedly calling African nations "shithole countries", US President Donald Trump has issued a letter to African leaders saying he "deeply respects" the continent and its people.
On Friday, Trump met with Rwanda's president Paul Kagame, also the new African Union chair, and called him a "friend."
He has reportedly called them as "s--hole countries".President Nana Akufo-Addo added that Ghana was "certainly not a "shithole country", while Senegal's president, Macky Sall, said in a statement that "Africa and the black race merit the respect and consideration of all".
The reported sh*thole remark drew outrage around the world and prompted several African governments, including the AU leadership (chaired by then by Uganda President Yoweri Museveni) to demand explanations from their U.S. ambassadors.
The pair spoke at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. African leaders are expected to respond to Trump's vulgar remark at their summit this weekend.

Kagame, who is also the current head of the African Union, a body that brings together the leaders of the continent's 55 leaders, thanked Trump for the support Rwanda has received from the United States."We had good discussions, on those two levels, the bilateral relations between Rwanda and the United States, Rwanda has benefited tremendously from the support of the United States", he said. The president also underscores his commitment to "strong and respectful relationships with African states".
The letter offers Trump's "deepest compliments" to the African leaders as they gather.
Four U.S. servicemen were killed in October after being ambushed by militants while on patrol in Niger.
The incident prompted a military investigation and questions in Congress about USA involvement in the region.
In the letter, Trump does not acknowledge the reported comments, but said Secretary of State Rex Tillerson would make a "extended visit" in March.
