The program provided a temporary reprieve from deportation, as well as work permission, to hundreds of thousands of immigrants who were brought to the USA illegally as children, commonly called "Dreamers".

The president laughed off Schumer's statement, telling reporters, "Schumer-well, I can tell you this: if you don't have a wall, you don't have DACA". "We must have safety and security, together with a strong Military, for our great people!" the president tweeted Tuesday night.

That gives Congress plenty of time to enact a constitutional replacement for DACA. The "DREAM" stands for Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors.

Schumer's office says he pulled the wall offer on Sunday.

Schumer accused Trump of rejecting two bipartisan compromises to avert the shutdown. With the clock ticking, Trump appeared to agree to a pair of deals with Democrats, then backed out and demanded more money for a border wall.

Later Thursday, a Republican source told CNBC that the White House is expected to support a young undocumented immigrants who were either shielded by DACA, or eligible for the Obama-era program. Trump rescinded the program on September 5, 2017, and gave Congress six months to find a permanent solution.

Around three dozen senators, evenly divided among Republicans and Democrats, planned to meet late Wednesday in what No. 2 Senate GOP leader John Cornyn of Texas said he hoped would "get people thinking about a framework that might actually work".

"DACA is something both Republicans and Democrats, the House and the Senate, all want to find a solution to-a permanent solution to that", she said at a press briefing on January 23.

Even if the Senate can come up with the votes to pass a plan, Democrats fear there is little chance such a bill would gain the support of House Republicans. They do not want true, comprehensive immigration reform.
