In a statement later Friday Trump said those who do not work with him to amend the deal are effectively siding with Iran.

"This is the last chance". In imposing sanctions on 14 key Iranian hardliners over their activities in other areas, the United States has further ramped up the tension.

Iran argues that continued USA sanctions on other, non-nuclear, areas such as human rights and missile testing have effectively barred Iran from gaining numerous financial benefits expected from the deal.

Mr Trump has repeatedly criticised the deal - reached under his predecessor Barack Obama - as "the worst ever". However, when Trump was elected, Riyadh and Tel Aviv found a new strong ally in their quest to discredit the deal and lobby the US government against the Iranian government.

ERNEST MONIZ: It looks to me as though the administration is in some sense thinking about having the Europeans in effect endorse an imposition of sanctions down the road even with Iran in compliance with the deal.

"It is absolutely necessary to have this to prevent the development of nuclear weapons at a time when other parts of the world are discussing how to get them", Gabriel said.

The U.S. waived all provisions of the Iran Threat Reduction and Syria Human Rights Act (ITRSHR) of 2012 except for those that applied to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its affiliates.

The Treasury Department also listed several Chinese individuals and companies for breaking similar rules to provide materials to Iran that could be used in navigation and weapons systems.

That in turn would cause crude prices to rise by $5 a barrel, Citigroup wrote, "as customers losing oil under US pressure scramble for replacements at a time when OPEC and other producers have put a lid on their output". One official said the actions "will send a very strong message that the United States is not going to tolerate their continued abuses". These restrictions were levied because of Iran's human rights violations, support of terrorism, and pursuit of a ballistic missile program.

The official said the White House also wants Congress and European allies to take sterner action before the next deadline for extending the deal.

The JCPOA placed widespread curbs on Iran's nuclear program and subjected it to an inspections regime hailed at the time as "unprecedented" by USA officials. "All of those steps can be taken outside of the nuclear deal, but if we cannot achieve worldwide consensus on them, then it will become even clearer that the nuclear deal is an impediment to peace".

Trump in October chose not to certify compliance and warned he might ultimately terminate the accord. And by the way, it has been endorsed by the U.N. Security Council.

The biggest name included in the new sanctions was Sadeq Larijani, head of the Iranian judiciary and brother of Ali Larijani, who is speaker of the Iranian parliament.

The president said in a statement on January 12 that he was granting the waiver for the "last" time and insisted that changes must be negotiated with European partners within 120 days to strengthen the accord or that the United States would likely pull out.

European signatories to the deal have pressured the United States to stick to the accord. It's keeping Iran's nuclear program in check.
