During a month in which the Russian Federation probe has steadily crept closer to the president and new details about Trump's attempts to manipulate law enforcement keep coming, we just found out he once tried to remove the man running the show. The former acting solicit general, who drafted the Justice Department's special counsel regulations in 1999, wrote that while Trump technically has "the raw power to fire Mueller", the move would only serve to bring Trump closer to a Nixonian end.
It shows how seriously we have to take the President's attempts to shut down this investigation.
The New York Times and other USA media reported Thursday that Trump had ordered the firing of Mueller in June 2017 but that the president climbed down when the top White House lawyer threatened to resign. "The President's not involved in any collusion", he said.
Meanwhile, despite the sensational nature of the Times report, there is likely little that Mueller doesn't already know about events in the White House. "It is time for them to put country and rule of law before party".
Still, it's worth emphasizing that this is not something Trump decided against; instead, it's a reality he's been forced into. But soon it will probably be the president himself who will have to explain to Mueller how his actions don't add up to obstruction of justice. Does it make it harder for Trump to fire him? We then started seeing in December what appeared to be an organized effort somewhat orchestrated out of the White House, promoted by certain networks that the president seems to follow that were saying - in effect using the words like coup about the Mueller investigation.
But this revelation is more concrete than news over the summer. He fired then-FBI Director James Comey, who was overseeing the investigation at the time, only to have it lead to the appointment of Mueller.

Robert Mueller, the special counsel overseeing the Russian Federation investigation, leaves the Capitol in Washington, last year. Just recently, we've also had evidence that he pressured Sessions to try to fire another senior Federal Bureau of Investigation official, Andrew McCabe. There are many more examples.
The newspaper reports that Trump demanded Mueller's firing just weeks after the special counsel was first appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
In Trump's case, it also raises deep concerns that his shoot-from-the-hip outspokenness could jeopardize his own legal position. McGahn has been described as the conduit for requests by Trump that Attorney General Jeff Sessions not recuse himself from the Russian Federation matter - although he ultimately did - and that FBI Director Christopher Wray get rid of Deputy Director Andrew McCabe. "There's been no indication that the president or the White House are not cooperating with the special counsel".
Tillis spokesman Daniel Keylin said some members have raised constitutionality concerns about the bills, and they now do not have the support needed to move them through Congress. Keylin said Friday that the talk about removing Mueller since last August when the measures were introduced have "completely come to a halt" as the President's team has shown signs of cooperation with the special counsel. Below are tweet threads that we think might be of particular interest to our readers. You say, oh, I'm going to dismiss him.
Trump attorney Ty Cobb told AFP: "We decline to comment out of respect for the Office of the Special Counsel and its process".
