Global reaction to Turkey's intervention illustrates the complexity of interests involved.

For the United States, the YPG is a key ally against both Islamic State jihadists and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

In the YPG-controlled area on the other bank of the Euphrates but still exposed to the long Turkish frontier, fighters are increasingly bitter about the U.S. role.

"We are concerned about the Turkish incident in northern Syria", he said during a joint press conference in London with British foreign secretary Boris Johnson.

The Turkish military said on Wednesday that 260 Kurdish and ISIL fighters were killed in the incursion, a claim refuted by a Kurdish commander, who said the number was "greatly exaggerated".

CNN reporters in the Turkish town of Reyhanli near the Syrian border said they heard regular artillery shelling continuing Tuesday, and understood that a front line around Mount Barsaya was shifting back and forth between the Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army rebel group and the YPG. A push toward Manbij some 100 km (60 miles) east of Afrin could threaten USA plans to stabilize a swath of northeast Syria.

In a statement Monday, British Prime Minister Theresa May's office said, "We are closely following developments in Afrin in northwestern Syria".

In Washington, there is some sympathy for the Kurdish plight.

Ankara has said the operation would be swift, but a spokesman for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signalled an open-ended cross-border campaign, saying it would end only when some 3.5 million Syrian refugees now living in Turkey could safely return home "and the separatist terror organisation has been cleansed from the region".

Erdogan and his USA counterpart Donald Trump will speak over the phone on Wednesday to discuss the situation in Afrin, according to Mevlut Cavusoglu, the Turkish foreign minister.

A Turkish operation in Manbij would be fraught with risk due to the presence of US military personnel in and around the town.

No issue is of higher priority than the Turkish invasion of the Syrian territory Afrin, however, which began over the weekend in an attempt to diminish the influence of Syrian Kurdish fighters.

Erdogan blasted the USA for supporting what he called a "terrorist organization" on Monday. The militia could not confirm whether the casualties were civilian or military. The United Nations on Tuesday also voiced concern.

"We've had our disagreements (with Turkey)".

Despite working with Russia's "Astana process" to retain influence in Syria, Turkey has clashed with Russian Federation over the role of the Kurds - which Moscow hoped to win over to Assad's fold.

Turkey on Saturday launched Operation Olive Branch to remove PYD/PKK and Daesh terrorists from the city of Afrin.

According to Iranian reports, Kurdish fighters have suddenly retreated from their positions in the Syrian-Iraqi border regions along Deir Ezzur and Iraq's al-Qaem border region in Western Al-Anbar, and Iraqi forces and Shi'ite Hashd al-Shaabi militia (backed by Iran) are moving in.
