Among those who said they had heard of GDPR, only a quarter had made changes to their operations to respond to the new legislation.

The Bill will give the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) power to issue higher fines, of up to €20 million or four per cent of global turnover for the most serious data breaches.

The ICO has stressed that "there will be no "grace" period" for compliance, "there has been two years to prepare and we will be regulating from this date".

Only 26 per cent of all charities which are aware of GDPR have taken steps to address it.

"Those who self-report, who engage with us to resolve issues and who can demonstrate effective accountability arrangements can expect this to be taken into account when we consider any regulatory action". People will have greater control over how their data is used and organisations will have to be transparent and account for their actions. "They are underestimating the sea change that GDPR brings about". Enhanced customer trust and more competitive advantage are just two of the benefits of getting it right.

Businesses are recommended to follow free guidance on protecting themselves from online attacks published by National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), such as the Cyber Essentials advice and the Small Business Guide.

A further break-up of the survey's findings shows that while 80 percent of large businesses that employ more that 250 people have heard about GDPR, only 31 percent of micro businesses and 49 percent of small businesses that hire fewer than 50 people have heard about the upcoming legislation.

'Gaining a good understanding of GDPR is still a work-in-progress for many organisations - and it's important to consider the impact mishandled data might have on the organisation itself, customers and employees. For example, how an organisation would delete personal data if asked.

In cases of personal data security breaches heard before the Board or the courts, the data controllers' implementation of the security measures provided in the Guidelines could be crucial in arguing that the appropriate security measures were taken.

Planning how to handle subject access requests.

Considering children, and whether age verification or parental consent is required.

Assigning a data protection officer.

The government's latest Cyber Security Breaches Survey has revealed that 62 percent of businesses and 56 percent of charities in the United Kingdom are still unaware about GDPR- a pan-European data security legislation that promises to impose fines of either 4 percent of an organisation's annual turnover or €20 Million (whichever is greater).

Of those that have made changes, just under a half of businesses and over one-third of charities made changes to cyber security practices.
