"The UK is facing an alcohol health awareness vacuum, and poor labelling is partially to blame".
A leading public health body is calling for graphic cigarette-style health warnings on bottles and cans of alcohol in the United Kingdom that would make clear the strength of each drink and the risks of exceeding the recommended limit, including for pregnant women and drivers. It originally worked with the organisation on research, including a survey of nearly 1,800 adults but claims the Portman Group has moved to make alcohol labels less informative to the public.
Mandatory inclusion of the government's low-risk drinking guidelines of no more than 14 units a week, potentially including an explicit cigarette-style warning of the link with health conditions, such as bowel and breast cancer.
The research also revealed that, when asked about health specifically, 70% of consumers believed the current approach to label information from the drinks industry "was about right".
Taking a sideswipe at industry-backed self-regulatory body The Portman Group, which co-funded the original consumer-focused Alcohol Labelling Research that underpinned these new proposals, both RSPH and the Alcohol Health Alliance accused The Portman Group of back-peddling on labelling recommendations, including low-risk guidelines.

In its report, the RSPH suggests a drink-drive warning and using traffic light colour coding, similar to that used on many food items in the United Kingdom, could be helpful for drinkers. This effect was particularly pronounced among young drinkers.
"The paper's summary warns: ". only one in 10 people link cancer to alcohol consumption, and 80 per cent don't know how many calories are in a glass of wine.
Warnings are now mandatory on most products "from tobacco to food and soft drinks, but alcohol continues to lag behind. If we are to raise awareness and reduce alcohol harm, this must change".
He has previously argued that given the vagaries of the amount of alcohol needed to be consumed to cause various types of cancer and the overall very low rate of death from alcohol-related diseases in general, simply stating alcohol causes cancer is a "lie by omission".
"It is clear from this research that the public want labels to include the drinking guidelines, and we know from our own research that 81% of the public want to see the guidelines on labels".
