Bloomberg: US says Russian gas link hurts European security

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in Warsaw on Saturday, January 27, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Europe should seek to diversify energy supplies, Bloomberg reported.

The pipeline, known as Nord Stream 2, would bypass Poland and leave Central Europe vulnerable to Russian pressure.

Tillerson said the pipeline was "not a healthy piece of infrastructure" for Europe's energy stability.

German energy groups Uniper and Wintershall, Austria's OMV, Anglo-Dutch group Shell and France's Engie have invested in the 1,225 km (760 mile) pipeline, which is to pump more Russian gas via the Baltic Sea. The US saw the contested Nord Stream 2 link as 'undermining Europe's overall energy stability and security, he said.

Poland is working to diversify its energy supplies and lessen its dependence on Russia's oil exports.

Death toll in Kabul bombing rises to 103
An explosives-filled ambulance exploded in Kabul , Afghanistan , on Saturday killing at least 95 people and wounding 158 others. Kabul has been the site of numerous bombing attacks claimed by the Islamic State group and the Taliban over the past year .

Poland, which spent four decades under Soviet domination after World War Two, still imports Russian gas to meet about two-thirds of its consumption. Tillerson encouraged further such sales and spoke in favour of a pipeline that would run from Poland to Norway.

The two diplomats also pledged to boost military cooperation.

Besides joint efforts in the energy industry, Poland's foreign minister said he was hopeful for more military co-operation with the U.S., after it installed troops in the former Communist country as part of a plan to better protect Nato's eastern flank.

"The stationing of American troops on our territory gives us, the Poles, a sense of security, and we are grateful for that", Czaputowicz said. Czaputowicz said Poland wants to complete negotiations 'soon and sign defence deals with the United States, including protracted talks about the delivery of the Patriot missile-defence system as well as Blackhawk helicopters.

Some 5,000 USA troops were deployed to Poland previous year as part of two separate American and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation missions. The deployments were intended reassure allies on NATO's eastern flank that the alliance was serious about protecting them from Russian aggression.
