US giving up on S. Sudan leader

Haley on Wednesday told the UN Security Council that her country was giving up on President Kiir for failing to end the violence in the war-torn nation.

South Sudan has hit back after the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations accused the country's leader of failing their people.

"It is not the business of Nikki Haley to say President Kiir is unfit or fit to rule South Sudan".

South Sudan plunged into ethnic violence in December 2013 when forces loyal to Kiir, a Dinka, started battling those loyal to his former vice-president, Riek Machar, a Nuer.

The statement comes a day after Nikki Haley, the USA ambassador to the United Nations, urged the body to impose an arms embargo and spoke of growing worldwide frustration with the South Sudanese government.

"The South Sudanese parties must realize that the global community and the region will not continue to tolerate agreements being signed, only to be violated in total impunity", Lacroix said.

Ambassador Haley noted in her address to the UN Security Council that the USA had "invested well over $11 billion in South Sudan and the government of President Kiir, but President Kiir and his government have become an unfit partner to the US for prolonging the war and the suffering of the people of South Sudan". "It's long past time that the Security Council establish an arms embargo on South Sudan".

"We can not stand by as South Sudanese leaders sign an agreement one day and authorise or allow its violation with impunity the next", Mogae told the council by video-conference from Juba.

South Sudan gained independence in 2011 but fell into a civil war in 2013, with tens of thousands killed and almost four million displaced ever since.
