Trump again waives sanctions against Iran

Two senior Trump administration officials told Reuters that the president, a Republican, had privately expressed reluctance to heed the advice of top advisers recommending he not reimpose the suspended sanctions.

"Fourth, the legislation must explicitly state in United States law-for the first time-that long-range missile and nuclear weapons programs are inseparable, and that Iran's development and testing of missiles should be subject to severe sanctions".

So far, the deal has helped defuse the Iranian nuclear crisis and bolstered the worldwide non-proliferation regime.

Instead, a senior White House official said, Trump wants Washington's European allies to use the 60-day period before sanctions relief again comes up for renewal to agree tougher measures.

Though AIPAC staunchly opposed the deal during the negotiations, it has not publicly addressed Trump's threat to pull out of the accord.

The U.S. State Department said it expects a decision to be made later Thursday or by the Friday deadline.

Trump will now work with European partners on a follow-on agreement that enshrines certain triggers that the Iranian regime can not exceed related to ballistic missiles, said a senior administration officials who briefed reporters on the decision.

The EU said in a statement it had taken note of Trump's decision and would assess its implications. According to Federica Mogherini, the "deal is working; it is delivering on its main goal, which means keeping the Iranian nuclear program in check and under close surveillance".

The officials spoke Friday in a conference call for journalists on the condition they not be named. The administration accuses Larijani of being responsible for the violent crackdown on dissidents in Iran during recent protests. Rajaee Shahr Prison and its director, Gholamreza Ziaei, also were included on the sanctions list. It also sanctioned agencies that censor or limit access to the Internet.

Trump has been criticizing the nuclear deal since it was signed in 2015, which has been widely seen as providing "clear and tangible" benefits by limiting Iran's nuclear program.

Trump declared in October that the agreement was "one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into", and warned that within a few years Iran would be able to "sprint towards a rapid nuclear weapons breakout". In an attempt to set the stage for another major political battle, he said this would be "the last time".
