Vince McMahon announced the return of the XFL at a press conference on Thursday, saying the league was preparing to kick off in 2020. We're going to hire people who really know what they're doing - experienced executives who will be out in front.
If you remember anything from the original XFL besides "He Hate Me", chances are it's McMahon screaming "THIS IS THE XFL" before the first game of the season. McMahon's wife, Linda, serves as the administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration for Trump.
The announcement comes as the NFL has seen a slide in ratings amid controversy surrounding head injuries and player protests against racial inequality and police brutality during the national anthem.
McMahon said the rules for political and social expression will be clear prior to players and coaches joining the league. "We're there to play football", McMahon explained. Both companies ended up losing $70 million each by the time the league folded, and the failure was not a great look for the WWE as a brand. He also said the league will consider the "quality of human being" when inviting players to the league.
The players' salary structure is still in development, but players will be paid to play and paid more to win.
The new league will have two years to get it right this time around.
The XFL will deliver a fan-centric, innovative experience, including shorter, fast-paced games and a family-friendly environment, complemented by cross-platform viewing options and real-time fan engagement.

The XFL was hyped as a more "extreme" version of football, with the elimination of fair catches and extra points.
The original XFL was a joint venture between WWE and NBC, with WWE talent working as play-by-play announcers and sideline reporters.
WWE released a statement to Deadspin's David Bixenspan in 2017 that distanced itself from the revival.
Vince McMahon has established and is personally funding a separate entity from WWE, Alpha Entertainment, to explore investment opportunities across the sports and entertainment landscapes, including professional football. Mr. McMahon has nothing further to announce at this time.
