West Bengal Two people killed after bus falls into canal in Murshidabad

Baharampur, Murshidabad: A bus packed with around 50 riders crashed through a bridge and plunged into a river in West Bengal's Murshidabad this morning. Two people have died and four other passengers have been resued.

The body of one passenger has been recovered but it is not clear how many people were on board the bus that had sunk in the canal which is connected to the Jalangi river, a tributary of the Hooghly.

Locals were the first to launch rescue operations.

The bus was travelling from Domkal to Berhampur. Some of the injured claimed that the bus driver was talking over the phone and only one hand was on the steering when the bus got out of control and the accident happened. Facing a stone-throwing mob, the police used tear gas shells and batons.

One of the eyewitnesses said after the accident, they rushed with their boats to rescue the victims.

Locals said there were many passengers in the bus and there are virtually no chances of anybody being alive. When the district administration and rescue workers arrived with cranes, the crowd threw stones at them.

"We are trying to disperse the crowd and pull the bus out with the help of a crane", said a district official. The police had to use teargas to quell the protests, according to NDTV. "We are reaching the spot. chief minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed her grief over the incident", transport minister Suvendu Adhikari said.
