The White House said on Wednesday (Jan 24) it plans to release a framework for immigration legislation next week as lawmakers have resumed tough negotiations on the fate of young immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children. Tell them not to worry.

Trump said on Twitter late on Tuesday night: "Cryin' Chuck Schumer fully understands, especially after his humiliating defeat, that if there is no Wall, there is no DACA".

The program now protects about 700,000 people, mostly Hispanic young adults, from deportation and provides them work permits.

"What's the White House's view on this?" Two days later, he rejected a bipartisan compromise put together by six U.S. Senators.

She declined to provide details about what would be included in the framework, including whether it would provide a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children, known as Dreamers, signaling only that it will represent "a compromise that members of both parties can support".

"We will make a long-term deal on immigration if, and only if, it is good for our country", he said.

Congress agreed to extend funding to February 8, but Republicans promised to allow debate on the future of the young illegal immigrants.

It was also slammed by some conservative groups, which decried the expansion of "amnesty" for illegal immigrants. Eighty-three percent of Republicans said Trump cared, while 80 percent Democrats said he didn't.

The immigration issue is now in flux with barely two weeks before a February 8 deadline agreed by both parties to either strike a deal, or take the issue to the Senate floor for debate before the "Dreamers" face mass deportation in March. "Because then we will fail, and it will be on the other side of the aisle that made that happen".

Illustrating the sharp divide on immigration, Trump took aim at Chuck Schumer overnight after the Senate minority leader withdrew an offer to fund a controversial wall on the Mexican border.

The House voted 266 to 150 to extend federal funding, hours after Senate Democrats dropped their opposition to the plan after winning Republican assurances of a vote on immigration in the coming weeks.

Sanders said the White House framework is based on dozens of conversations Trump and his staff have had with members of both parties and that "it addresses all of the different things that we've heard from all of the various stakeholders" during the past several months. That suggests both parties would be allowed to offer amendments.

A delegation of Cabinet members was scheduled to leave Monday, but it was delayed amid the federal government shutdown.
