With talking stick in hand, moderate senators broke the shutdown

As their colleagues went on the airwaves or rushed to the Senate floor to noisily trade blame over a government shutdown, about two dozen centrist senators from both parties crammed for hours into the Capitol Hill office of Senator Susan Collins, Republican of ME, to try to chart a civil way out of what Senator Mitch McConnell had called a "box canyon".

"As you can imagine, with that many senators in a room, they all want to talk at once", Collins told the Associated Press.

Each senator could voice his or her opinion, but they were only allowed to do so if they were holding the "talking stick".

"I can show it to you", the Maine Republican said as she hoisted up a colorful stick used to give individual senators a chance to speak during bipartisan discussions on passing a funding bill to end the government shutdown.

The stick was relatively effective, members told CNN, but there was one incident in which a senator threw the stick at another member who was asking questions while the first spoke. The group that she pulled together has been around for some time, calling themselves the Common Sense Coalition.
