Mischa Zverev wasn't the only one unimpressed with his first-round effort against South Korean Hyeon Chung.

It comes after tennis's Grand Slam Board introduced new measures to stop players turning up injured or ill, only to retire in the first round and yet still pick up a lucrative first-round loser's cheque.

Speaking to members of the German news media after his match, Zverev said he woke up with a fever on the morning of his first-round match.

That led to claims that some players who were not fully fit were starting matches so as not to lose out on the prize money.

Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley says the fact four players opted to withdrew before the season-opening slam kicked off, with Zverev was the only first-round retirement, provided proof the new rule has had the desired result.

With first-round prize money of A$60,000 ($48,012), Zverev may well be out of pocket for his trip Down Under given the cost of airlines tickets, hotels and coaches. Chung has progressed to the quarterfinals after a run that also included wins over No. 4 Alexander Zverev - Mischa's younger brother - and six-time champion Novak Djokovic.

Zverev's fine was the largest ever received by a player for an on-site Grand Slam offence. On the other side, a lower-ranked player gets a chance to step in and compete at a Grand Slam event, as well as earn some notable amount of money.

The new rule came in response to a rash of first-round retirements at Wimbledon past year.

At last year's Wimbledon, eight players retired from their opening round matches, including the opponents of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic during the second sets of their matches on Centre Court.

Australia's Bernard Tomic finished his first-round match - a straight-sets loss to Zverev - but was later fined $15,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct for saying he was bored during the match and couldn't find any motivation to compete.
