Russian Federation has scrubbed the planned launch of an unmanned cargo spacecraft that was to have delivered tons of supplies to the International Space Station.
It's not clear how putting the station in private hands would work, since the ISS is an global program involving a number of other countries.
The Post reported that the White House will request $150 million from Congress for the fiscal year beginning October 1 in order to "to enable the development and maturation of commercial entities and capabilities which will ensure that commercial successors to the ISS -potentially including elements of the ISS - are operational when they are needed".
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has ripped plans to defund the space station, hoping those reports "prove as unfounded as Bigfoot" and calling Office of Management and Budget decision-makers "numbskulls", according to the Post. "As a fiscal conservative, you know one of the dumbest things you can to is cancel programs after billions in investment when there is still serious usable life ahead", he said, though he qualified that he was open to "reasonable proposals".
But some questioned who would want to take over the station.
Frank Slazer, the vice president of space systems for the Aerospace Industries Association, said the plan also could prove sticky with the station's global partners. "It's inherently always going to be an global construct that requires USA government involvement and multi-national cooperation".

Boeing now operates the station for NASA, which costs $3 to $4 billion annually.
The Verge reported last month that Trump was planning to request an end to funding for the International Space Station (ISS) by 2025.
Beginning during the presidency of George W. Bush (2001-2009), Nasa has subcontracted certain ISS support operations, starting with the supply flights now carried out by the SpaceX and Orbital ATK companies - a trend that gained speed during the Obama presidency.
After a transition period, the government would end direct support after 2024, the newspaper said, citing NASA documents.
It was not clear, however, how private companies might profit from taking over the aging station - its first section was launched in 1998.
