Jats threaten to block Amit Shah's rally Haryana withdraws 70 cases

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday issued notices to Centre and the state government of Haryana, seeking their response on a plea that raised concerns on pollution during BJP president Amit Shah's rally in Jind that will see participation of almost 1 lakh motorbikes.

As Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah is ready to hold a bike rally in Haryana's Jind on 15 February 2018, Jat outfits are threatening to block the rally.

All India Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti (AIJASS) chief Yashpal Malik had cited non-fulfilment of a number of the group's demands as the reason behind the plan to block the BJP chief's rally with almost 50,000 tractor trolleys. "Hence, we have made a decision to protest against the anti-farmer policies of the BJP, when Mr. Shah comes to Jind", said party's senior Haryana leader Rajeev Godara.

Khattar had yesterday invited Malik to hold talks in an apparent bid to pacify the angry Jats who had threatened to disrupt the BJP chief's proposed rally.

"We discussed the call given by the AIJASS and how to maintain law-and-order situation". Speaking on the matter, Haryana's Director General of Police (DGP) BS Sandhu said the state has sought the help of 150 companies of central forces. "If we do not get a satisfactory reply from him then we will not allow his rally", senior INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala said.

"The government has assured us that they will withdraw all the cases registered in connection with Jat reservation agitation in Haryana, irrespective of the caste of the accused".

This week, the state government chose to initiate the process for withdrawing cases against at least 850 protesters who were made accused in several dozens of FIRs. Government has also assured that they will be passing a Bill in Parliament regarding granting reservation to Jat community in government jobs and educational institutes.

Haryana government recently withdrew 70 such cases, but Malik had been demanding withdrawal of all cases, including 90 cases of heinous crimes such as murder and attempt to murder.

Be that as it may, he also has to take care of environmental concerns.

The petitioner, Victor Dhissa, a Supreme Court lawyer, has contended that instead of motorbikes, the state government should opt for bicycles or other environment friendly modes of transport for the rally.

The petitioner said he was forced to prefer the application following the announcement that one lakh motorbikes will be mobilised for the rally being organized by Haryana government for honouring and welcoming the president of a political party. Dhissa said in his plea that Delhi-NCR has been facing serious air pollution and in view of this, there should be a review of the impact of the motorbike rally.
