US Senate leaders reach long-term, bipartisan budget deal to avert shutdown

The U.S. Senate, in a rare display of bipartisanship, on Wednesday reached a two-year budget deal to raise federal spending by nearly $300 billion, in an attempt to end the kind of squabbling over fiscal issues that has plagued Washington for years.

Meanwhile, conservative House Republicans blasted the plan's calls for a almost $300 billion increase in federal spending over the next two years, raising concerns over federal deficits.

Ryan said House Republicans are happy about military, infrastructure and opioid crisis funding, and ditching the independent payment advisory board for the Affordable Care Act.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced Wednesday that he and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) have reached a budget agreement to avoid a government shutdown.

Once Congress funds the government - if it does - McConnell said he would keep his promise to bring up legislation to address immigration and specifically a fix for the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program that Trump ordered to expire on March 5.

The New York Times also reported the budget cap for military spending would be raised by about $80 billion in FY 2018 and $85 billion in FY 2019.

"If we don't change it, let's have a shutdown". The House voted 240 to 186 in support of a bipartisan package to extend U.S. government funding till March 23. An agreement is now being worked out between Senator Chuck Schumer and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

The deal, agreed upon by both the Democratic and Republican leaders of the Senate, was immediately welcomed by the White House. Defense hawks and moderates said the deal was an imperfect but decent compromise while conservatives blasted it as an ill-advised budget-buster.

Hours before the bill was passed, president Trump said he would love to see the government shutdown if congress does not reach an agreement on an immigration deal.

"I ran for office because I was very critical of President Obama's trillion-dollar deficits", the Kentucky senator said. Paul eventually yielded the floor just after 7 p.m., but made it clear, he's a "no", and might be back for more protesting from the floor. "It lifts the spending caps for defense and urgent domestic priorities, so our armed forces, for the first time in a long time, well-funded, and so many things that affect middle-class New Yorkers will be well-funded as well".

Lawmakers are up against two key deadlines that were put in place as part of the negotiations to reopen the government last month, creating a short window to show substantial signs of progress on a deal to protect undocumented immigrants who came to this country as children and their families.
