Cambridge University was No. 1, with 36 rankings in the Top 10, while UC Berkeley was No. 3 with 34 rankings in the Top 10.
The independent QS rankings finds U of T among the world's elite universities in all five subject areas surveyed, and in 45 of the 48 subjects that were analyzed.
Trinity College Dublin (TCD) is ranked 25th and University College Dublin (UCD) is 31st in the QS 2018 World University Rankings by Subject.
The University of Otago secured five subjects in the top 50 worldwide, three of which improved their position from the previous year. This result, according to QS Quacquarelli Symonds, is "a testament to its global competitiveness for a range of core disciplines".
The rankings also indicate that Taylor's University has Malaysia's highest ranked department, rising eight places to 21st for Hospitality and Leisure Management.
New Zealand's most-ranked universities were the University of Auckland and the University of Otago, which ranked in 40 disciplines and 33 disciplines respectively.
"The latest QS rankings reflect the rapid expansion and external recognition of our comprehensive research and teaching profile".

Overall, Irish universities suffered about twice the number of falls in rankings than improvements.
The inclusion of Sport in this year's subject rankings highlights the University's Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science, a program offered exclusively at its Central Coast campus, incorporating valuable work experience with professional sporting teams, including the Central Coast Mariners Football Club, the Newcastle Jets and the Newcastle Knights.
"These are stronger results compared to 2017, which was in turn much stronger than 2016", says Otago's deputy vice-chancellor Professor Vernon Squire.
"Not only do these outstanding rankings cement our status as New Zealand's leading university, they show that we are more than holding our own internationally".
