15 security personnel killed in Taliban attack in Afghanistan

At least 24 members of the Afghan security forces have been killed in a Taliban attack in the western province of Farah, officials said.

Several soldiers were reported missing after the attack during which one armoured military vehicle was destroyed and two others were seized by the attackers together with weapons.

Afghanistan has seen a surge in attacks in recent months, with militants often targeting state security forces.

Head of Farah provincial council Farid Bakhtawar said the forces had gone to Fararod area in Bala Blok district on Friday night to launch an operation, but were ambushed by Taliban while on their way.

This week's incident was the latest in a series to have hit Farah province, between the border with Iran and the Taliban heartland of Helmand province, source of much of Afghanistan´s opium crop. The group, however, said in a statement that they had killed dozens of security force members.

Defense Ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri said only four members of the Afghan special forces had been killed and a number wounded.

Zabiullah Mujahid, a purported Taliban spokesman, claimed that 53 Afghan soldiers were killed and injured when Taliban fighters stormed their position in Farah Rod.
