"I made sure I pushed everybody for what was best for the team".

"He's a selfless guy that does everything the right way", Shanahan said. "He can do both and when you can do both, it puts defenses a lot more in a bind and gives us a lot more options".

Neither McKinnon nor the team's other high-priced addition on offense, center Weston Richburg, have played in an National Football League system like the 49ers'. Shanahan said McKinnon, 25, has the toughness to be a starting running back - "This guy is violent, doesn't turn anything down", he said - but his role will be different with the 49ers. The fit was just flawless for me.

McKinnon's dynamic running style figures to translate well into Shanahan's system.

He played there the past three seasons and is considered one of the top pass-blocking players at the position and has the athleticism to thrive in Shanahan's zone-running scheme. Much of that, however, can be attributed to lack of opportunity, which won't be an issue for McKinnon any longer.

"I see myself doing those kinds of things", he said. "That's the opportunity that I want. At the end of the day, I said the chips are going to fall where they'll fall".
