Afghan official says Taliban attack kills 15 security forces

A total of 24 members of the Afghan security services were killed as a result of two attacks staged by militants in the country's western province of Farah, local media reported on Saturday.

Militants reportedly attacked soldiers who had assembled in preparation for an attack in Bala Buluk district.

Insecurity has increased in Farah province in recent months.

This week's incident was the latest in a series to have hit Farah province, between the border with Iran and the Taliban heartland of Helmand province, source of much of Afghanistan's opium crop.

Among those killed were nine members of the Afghan Special Operations Forces, according to the report.

The leader of provincial council, Fared Bakhtawar confirmed that the deaths included seven military commandos as well as eight officials in Bala Buluk region.

Zabiullah Mujahid, a purported Taliban spokesman, claimed that 53 Afghan soldiers were killed and injured when Taliban fighters stormed their position in Farah Rod. The group, however, said in a statement that they had killed dozens of security force members.
