Afghan president offers Taliban peace talks

Given the Taliban's resilience, which has led to astring of attacks in recent weeks, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani recently proposed a contentious peace deal "without preconditions".

His statement was part of a written response from the Taliban to a New Yorker article chronicling efforts towards peace talks by an American expert on Afghanistan, Barnett Rubin.

The Taliban official has also warned Afghan government that the talks of shuttering the Doha office would scuttle the group's offer of talks altogether. The government's position is consistent with India's support to an "Afghan-led, Afghan-owned and Afghan-controlled reconciliation process, within the framework of the Afghan Constitution and the internationally accepted red lines".

The Mission "strongly supports the vision for peace through intra-Afghan dialogue and urges all parties involved to engage at the earliest time", the release said. A Taliban official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that senior Taliban leaders were studying the proposal.

"Certainly the United States could have a role in that".

Ultimately, we don't see there being a military solution to the situation in Afghanistan.

Ghani said a ceasefire must be agreed on and the Taleban must be declared a political group.

Kabul is hosting the second round of the peace conference at which representatives from 25 countries will discuss counter-terrorism and conflict resolution strategies.

He renewed an offer of talks with Pakistan, which rejects the accusations and points to the thousands of its citizens who have been killed by militant groups over the years.

Gen Janjua told the Afghan envoy that Pakistan wanted an early end to the internecine bloodshed in the Afghanistan and has all along supported efforts for political reconciliation under global and regional peace initiatives.
