Fire departments in Albany, Ore., and Vancouver, Wash., want you to check your smoke alarms.
The affected products are Kidde Dual Sensor (Photoelectric and Ionization) Smoke Alarms, models PI2010 and PI9010, with manufactured dates between September 2016 and October 2017.
Almost 500,000 smoke alarms that might fail are being recalled.
The affected units were sold at major retailers including Walmart, Amazon, and Home Depot as well as on Kidde's website.
"We have voluntarily initiated this recall out of an abundance of caution".

Consumers should remove the alarm from the wall/ceiling and visually inspect it through the opening on the side of the alarm for the presence of a yellow cap.
The firm has received one report of the yellow protective cap being present on a smoke alarm before it was installed in a consumer's home. If you find a yellow cap, or you are unable to check your smoke alarm, call the Albany Fire Department at 541-917-7700. If there's no yellow cap, the company said to "reinstall the smoke alarm" as no further action is required. If you had the fire department install an alarm for you between September 2016 and January 2018, take a look at it.
According to the Triad Business Journal, the units were manufactured in China by Fyrnetics Limited and distributed from Kidde's headquarters, located in Mebane, North Carolina. They can be seen inside the smoke alarm.
Smoke alarms only have one job, to detect smoke. Kidde said that those affected should only discard their alarms after receiving a replacement.
