De Blasio taps Miami schools chief as next DOE chancellor

Miami-Dade Schools chief Alberto Carvalho could be leaving Miami for New York City.

Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to make the official announcement on Thursday.

Born in Portugal, Carvalho started his career as a physics, chemistry, and calculus teacher at Miami Jackson Senior High.

The Miami-Dade School Board said Carvalho has been offered the job, but has not formally accepted the position.

Rumors about Carvalho's appointment had been floating around City Hall for days.

Miami-Dade County Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho is headed to NY.

The incoming chancellor started his two-decade career in Miami's schools as a teacher, eventually becoming a principal and climbing the ranks to become superintendent almost 10 years ago.

Eric Hoskins resigns as health minister, MPP
Hoskins has advocated for Canada's universal, single-payer health-care system to be expanded to cover prescription drugs. He even dared the government to steal his party's proposal and implement a national pharmacare plan.

Officials from Miami wished him well in NY.

He's also been criticized for failing to punish teachers in a cheating scandal and was accused of having an extramarital relationship with a reporter for the Miami Herald.

The news comes two months after Chancellor Carmen Fariña announced she would retire early this year after four years as chancellor.

"Over my dead body will anyone walk into our schools and yank any child from the sanctity and the protection that schools, as sanctuaries of the young, provide", he said in a speech last November.

In a written statement issued Wednesday night, de Blasio, a Democrat, called Carvalho "a world-class educator with an unmatched track record of success", a pick that he said came after an "extensive, national search".

New York City is the nation's biggest school system; Miami's is the fourth largest.
