Yahoo Finance reports that Amazon is attempting to Alexa, its smart assistant, into a translator that would go beyond just words and phrases, which it's now able to do.

Amazon reportedly also wants Alexa to be capable of translating languages on-the-fly which means that if someone is talking to you in a local language that you do not understand, Amazon would translate it into your native language in real-time. The feature will not be ready any time soon, but it will make Alexa-powered devices such as the Amazon Echo much more useful. Alexa will also be mindful of the Japanese culture, which is more formal and conservative than American culture.

"For instance, if a person from the United States, who only speaks English, attends a wedding in Tokyo and doesn't speak Japanese, Alexa would be able to help that person hold a conversation in Japanese", the report notes.

More changes will happen to Alexa. "Alexa, what do I say to the father of the bride at a wedding in Japan?" The idea is for Alexa to be able to hear and listen to a conversation and then translate the words to make sense.

Amazon, which now offers AI translation as a service for developers, does not now provide cultural context or understanding through Alexa.

Others are trying similar tactics-the Google Translate app can translate a two-way conversation with an internet connection, though without the promise of understanding cultural context.

Alexa can already translate words and phrases from several languages, including French and German, when asked, but a report from Yahoo Finance claims that Amazon wants to turn its assistant into a proper real-time translator that can handle any situation. Samsung's Bixby voice assistant on its Galaxy phones is already capable of basic translations, while Bragi also created wireless earphones previous year that featured real-time translation.
