Reportedly, RMIT researchers have published a paper in the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, which states that the new battery with carbon-based electrode will help toward electric power storage and accomplishing the global zero GHG emissions initiative.

"As the world is moving to renewable energy that would reduce the greenhouse effect and climate change, requirements for the storage of electrical energy will increase".

The problem of increasing the power consumption of batteries has always been before the engineers, but none of the prototypes so far not been able to fully replace lithium-ion batteries used in most electronic devices, such as smartphones. The development of the proton battery was a joint effort by scientists from the School of Engineering (Aerospace, Mechanical, and Manufacturing), RMIT University, Victoria, Australia and the Mechanical Engineering Department, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, Punjab, India.

Potential applications for the proton battery include household storage of electricity from solar photovoltaic panels, as done now by the Tesla "Power wall" which uses lithium ion batteries.

But our new research suggests that "proton batteries" - rechargeable batteries that store protons from water in a porous carbon material - could make a valuable contribution.

In electricity supply mode, this process is reversed: the protons are released from the storage and travel back through the reversible fuel cell to generate power by reacting with oxygen from air and electrons from the external circuit, forming water once again. Hydrogen gas is not there.

"Lithium-ion batteries are great but they rely on ultimately scarce and expensive resources", he said.

Experts believe that carbon, which finds application in the proton battery, is abundantly available as compared to metal hydrogen-storage alloy and lithium.

The researchers' experiments showed that their small proton battery, with an active inside surface area of only 5.5 square centimetres (smaller than a 20 cent coin), was already able to store as much energy per unit mass as commercially-available lithium ion batteries.

Our research will now focus on further improving performance and energy density through use of atomically thin layered carbon-based materials such as graphene.
