US Childhood Obesity Still on the Rise, New Study Shows

Despite previous reports of a decline in childhood obesity, new study data suggest there is no decline in obesity in children aged 2 to 19 years, and prevalence of severe obesity in children aged 2 to 5 years has actually increased.

In 2015-2016, 26 percent of two to five year-olds were considered overweight, 13.7 percent ranked as class I obesity (a BMI of between 30 and 34.9); 1.8 percent as class II obesity (BMI between 35 to 39.9); and 0.2 percent as class III obesity (BMI equal or greater than 40). "Unfortunately, our data, looking at the same age group, show this decline now appears to be reversing".

In an editorial accompanying the study, Dr. David Ludwig called for a more systematic national strategy to fight childhood obesity, one that addresses the problems of poor diet, lack of physical activity and difficulty accessing healthy food.

Researchers analyzed findings from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which collects data on childhood and adult obesity once every two years. The survey used data in the United States between 1999 and 2016. They compared body mass index (BMI) reported in 2013 and 2014 to BMI reported in 2015 and 2016.

Across all age groups, African-American and Hispanic children had higher rates of overweight and all levels of obesity, while Asian-American children had markedly lower rates. For children aged 2 to 19 years, a positive linear trend was observed for all definitions of overweight and obesity; the trend was most prominent among adolescents.

The lead author of the study, Asheley Cockrell Skinner of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, said, "Obesity is not going away, and all kids are still at risk".

Obesity among kids is a problem over a decade. "This evidence is important in keeping the spotlight shined on programs to support healthy changes". As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) points out, children and teens who are obese are at increased risk for a variety of medical problems, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol (which are risk factors for heart disease), type 2 diabetes, asthma, sleep apnea and joint problems. "When we see that leveling off, we can become complacent - we can't afford to do that".

Obesity is worsening in American kids, researchers reported Monday. The research focuses on the numbers - not ways parents can help their kids stay healthy or shave off extra pounds. It's more complicated than energy in-energy out, said Tom Baranowski, a psychologist who has tried to develop ways to prevent pediatric obesity since the 1980s.

"Maybe we should wait a little bit longer before making a strong conclusion", said Xiaozhong Wen, PhD, an assistant professor of biological sciences in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, who was not involved in the study. "It tells us that our efforts to improve the health of children are not reaching across the country".
