Australian cricket team coach Darren Lehmann has asked for forgiveness for Steve Smith David Warner and Cameron Bancroft
"Despite generational change, independent reviews and too many behavioural spot fires to list, Cricket Australia and the national team had demonstrated no real willingness or desire to improve the culture within their organisation from season to season", he wrote on www.playersvoice.com.au.
"Been thinking about my position for a while, despite telling the media yesterday that I'm not resigning", said Lehmann, adding the decision to quit was tough but voluntary.
Former players have been calling for Lehmann's head after television footage showed him sending a message out onto the field before Bancroft dropped the piece of sandpaper he was clandestinely using to rough up the ball down his pants.
"I know I will regret this for the rest of my life".
Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner were given one-year bans by Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland and were also barred from any leadership role for a further two years.
Matthews said Western Australian cricket would consider changing its rules to allow Bancroft to play for his local grade side Willeton, which he is now banned from doing under Cricket Australia's sanctions. "The punishment that has followed has been extremely severe, and I can not help but think of Smith and Bancroft".
"I'm not going to sit here and say what (people should think and do). they can make their minds up on it themselves".
"Clearly this has caused a huge amount of damage to the cricket game as a whole, and certainly Australian cricket and it's compromised the fans' faith in cricket and it is our responsibility, players, administrators, coaches and others to reinstall that faith and confidence", he said.
