Councillors are to vote on an EFF motion of no confidence in DA mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay Athol Trollip.

"In the event of grave disorder, the speaker may adjourn the meeting or suspend proceedings for a period", said speaker Jonathan Lawack.

The debate had not yet taken place when the meeting was adjourned. "Which I did. On which grounds are you challenging that?" This was after Lawack refused to make the motion of no confidence the first item on the agenda.

On Thursday, the EFF - with the support of other parties, including the ANC and UDM - is planning to push for a motion of no confidence against Trollip, the speaker of council Jonathan Lawack and chief whip Werner Senekal, all of the DA. This led to DA leader Mmusi Maimane intervening before city manager Johann Mettler also attempted to calm the councillors down.

The meeting came to a complete standstill as ANC, United Front and EFF councillors sang struggle songs after Lawack ignored their calls to remove Bhanga after he allegedly made "cutting of the throat gestures".

All but two of the EFF councillors walked out, followed shortly afterwards by the ANC. According to the DA leader, the ruling party "had already conceded defeat" on Thursday morning when the ANC "refused to put up a candidate".

Currently, Lawack is in a meeting with local leaders from all political parties to discuss the way forward.

The opposition parties opposed this, arguing that Lawack had agreed in a multiparty meeting to postpone the special council meeting for 14 days.

Members of the mayoral committee have indicated that a new request for a special council meeting will need to be submitted for the motions to be heard.
